Gratitude

"Breathing in, I know I am breathing in. Breathing out, I know I am breathing out." Thich Nhat Hanh

Last year, while I was going through a very dark period in my life I discovered the practice of daily gratitude. I came across an article in a magazine that I picked up at my local health food store in Toronto where a woman described her daily practice of gratitude writing, which consisted of writing down five things that you are grateful for each day, either at the beginning or at the end of your day. Those five things that you write down can be very small and insignificant to others, but they are meaningful to you.

During my darkness and my misery and gloom, I tried to muster up the energy from deep within me to start my own gratitude practice. When I look back to what I wrote last year in my gratitude journal, I realize that I was mostly grateful for breathing....yes, the simple and basic breath that sustains me on a second by second basis. For you see, I couldn't find other things to be grateful for during my darkness, but breathing...now there is something to be grateful for. A year later, my gratitude journal looks different...but I'm grateful for experiencing darkness for it reminded me of the simple act of breathing and for being grounded in it.

I have learned that from starting this practice, gratitude has extended beyond the pages of my journal and I find myself being grateful and expressing gratitude towards those around me. I have realized that, the gratitude practice, that started in darkness has manifested itself into the light....into my daily existence. For this I'm grateful for.

Take a moment right now and breathe....inhale slowly.....exhale slowly....you are alive, you are beautiful, you are powerful, you are whole. Inhale again....and remember this, you are love personified.....exhale and remember this, you are a blessing to those around you, and for this reality be grateful.

Hospitality

"Here in this body are the sacred rivers: here are the sun and moon as well as all the pilgrimage places....I have not encountered another temple as blissful as my own body." Saraha

Body Hospitality

Come in and sit down for a while,
I welcome you inside myself, my body accommodates your presence.
I welcome you, yes, you the Unknown...

Unknown territory that has come to say hello to chat for a while,
your unfamiliar way of being leaving me breathless.

I listen to you speak and I give you the space to be yourself, knowing that in acknowledging who you are I also give myself permission to be myself....

My body claims and reclaims its primal genuineness, as I hear my soul whisper in the night the faithfulness of my life story. The flow of my unspoken words travel through my veins, creating dreams that reveal the deepest sense of my existence, leaving watercolour paintings imprinted on my soul.

For my body knows the depth of my reality....within its fibres it contains the solitude of my heart and the truth of my existence....

Unknown territory, a guest in my house, you beckon me to listen to the gentle murmuring of my soul.

How is your heart?

I've been asked this question on separate occasions by different individuals over the past few months ....How is your heart?....it has taken me by surprise. I'm taken aback by the question....and by my hesitancy to answer....I remain silent and I listen to my own thoughts in my head, I listen to my heart speak quietly to me and I listen....I listen intently....I let it speak to me and I dare not disturb it from speaking...it has its own voice....its own dance...

How is your heart? You don't have to answer to me...answer that question to yourself, in the quiet of your soul...answer that question honestly, truthfully, without judgement, remorse, or guilt. Speak the words that it wants to speak to yourself...only you can answer to yourself...to your own inner truth.

Stand naked and reveal the truth to yourself, reveal your heart to yourself and stand in the reality of your truth...whatever that reality may be for you.

How is your heart?

Praying the Heart
by Elizabeth Cunningham, from her book of poems Small Bird

You can only pray what's in your heart.

So, if your heart is being ripped from your chest
pray the tearing

if your heart is full of bitterness
pray it to the last dreg

if your heart is a river gone wild
pray the torrent

or a lava flow scorching the mountain
pray the fire

pray the scream in your heart
the fanning bellows

pray the rage,
the murder and the mourning

pray your heart into the great quiet hands that can hold it
like the small bird it is

It's been silent......

"I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, welling and swelling I bear in the tide......"  Maya Angelou

It's been silent here lately....but that's okay...it's part of the Arroyo nature....fullness and emptiness....

I bear the truth of snow covered silence, my voice breaks the icy water.....
Reality seeps into my veins as cold as the night....bearing the truth in my soul......
Resilience wraps her arms around me carrying me in her bosom....sustaining me with strength.....
The truth of my being breathes into the cold air, echoing endurance.

Reclaiming

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" Mary Oliver

Mi vida...my life....seduces me into being....

I reclaim my untamed ways....the unrestrained manner in which my heart explores love......

I redeem my freedom...the one that makes me thrive on a daily basis as it boldly makes my hips sway to the sound of my ecstatic heart beat.

I call out to my body and I reclaim my playfulness....the one that makes my soul dance and sing under the full moon.

I invite the tide of self-love into my being....I open up to the waves of uncontrolled love to permeate my senses.

Choosing to believe

'Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.'  Rumi

As I begin to write in this blank space that I'm choosing to create for myself....and consciously choosing to express myself freely....I realize that to choose to do something is quite the task.  Choosing something...choosing to believe in something....to believe in oneself...to believe in someone else....to believe....choosing to believe.

As I write these words, I'm reminded of another time in my life when I was trying to choose what to do with my life, I was coming to a point where I had to sit down and choose between one choice or another. I remember sitting down with a very wise woman and she shared her wisdom with me....she said...."my dear....whenever you come to a crossroad in your life, always remember one thing....choose life, choose what brings life to you, choose the things, places, events and people that are life giving to you, because you were meant to live life, to choose life....life in abundance"

I choose to believe in myself, I choose to believe in life, I choose to believe in goodness and most important of all I choose to believe in love....love in abundance.....against all odds and all the barriers that are within myself.....for I am realizing that at the heart of everything that sustains me, that brings life to me, that breathes life into me.... it is pure overflowing love.

What do you choose to believe in?
